SILENT AUCTION ITEMS

Guests at Sultana Projects’ 2011 Annual Gala on September 17, 2011, will have an opportunity to bid on the following items during the Silent Auction:

COCKTAILING LIKE THE GATSBYS

Cruise for Six on the “Hair of the Dog”

Minimum Bid $200

Donated by Taylor Buckley

Entertain your best, fanciest friends aboard a

35-foot art-deco launch inspired by ‘20s-era

speedboats. Three hours on the Chester or its

tributaries. Full bar and snacks included. And a

dashingly handsome captain, too. No orchestra.

RUN THIS UP YOUR YARD ARM

The Original Sultana Shipyard Sign

Minimum Bid $100

We hate to part with this priceless piece of

SULTANA memorabilia, but frankly, we need the

money. This is the original sign that hung at the

Sultana Shipyard during the vessel’s construction.

Measures about 18’ x 30’. Decorate your den with

this gem, or hang it out front and start your own

shipyard.

BIG BANG FOR YOUR BUCKS

Sea Service Musket

Minimum Bid $150

Make some noise with this hand-made,

reproduction of a Royal Navy Sea-Service Musket

(circa 1768). Or just let it grace your mantelpiece.

Made for use on SULTANA, but a burden for us to

keep clean and operating. This shortened version

of the classic Brown Bess flintlock was made for

close combat on deck and balanced to stay in a

rack onboard ship. Gun has been fired, but we

recommend checking with a reputable blackpowder

expert before trying it yourself! Not for use

with projectiles.

SCHOONER NOT INCLUDED

Sultana’s Top Sail

Minimum Bid $200

A “previously sailed” fore topsail from the

schooner SULTANA made by Nat Wilson

Sailmakers, Bar Harbor, Maine. Hand-sewn

boltrope and scads of intricate details make this

ideal for an awning, the raw material for ditty bags

or just a fabulous conversation piece draped in

your great room. Then again, you could build a

schooner to go with it. Approximately 20’ x 12’

square.

GIVE THAT KID SOMETHING TO

REMEMBER (FONDLY)

Week-Long Summer Trip on Sultana

Minimum Bid $350

A week-long voyage on our schoolship schooner

for children aged 11-14. Several openings in

July 2012 originating at various ports on the Bay.

This is the only “Tall Ship” sailing program on

the Chesapeake. A $750 value and a once-in-a-lifetime

experience.

HIGH-CLASS GLASS, OH YES!
Glass Artwork from Hegland Glass
Minimum Bid $250
Donated by Hegland Glass
Patti and Dave Hegland can tell you “how’d
they do that,” but they will not reveal the secret
of turning inspiration into unique and beautiful
objects. This one is called Horizon’s Edge and
was inspired by the colors and seemingly endless
expanse of the Bay and it’s surrounding terrain.
The rim is highly polished to collect light and
provide visibility inside the piece’s walls.

I’VE GOT DIBS ON THE YELLOW ONE
NAMED ZIGGY

Kayak Naming Opportunity
Fixed Price $350
Honor thy father. Or mother, daughter, aunt,
favorite teacher, president, or auto mechanic.
Have the name of your choice (tasteful and nonreligious,
of course) permanently affixed to a
member of Sultana’s kayak fleet. Helps kids from
getting confused about which kayak is theirs!
We will send you a photo of your kayak in action!
Swamp Bunny is still available.

WHAT ELSE D’YA GOT IN THE SULTANA
ATTIC?

Sultana Anchor, Slightly Used
Minimum Bid $100
Okay, so it’s broken. But this victim of a tragic
collision with a pier that jumped in front of our
little ship still has a useful life as a garden gizmo,
mailbox post, or something to put on top of your
mobile home in a wind storm. It’s made from
ductile iron and is based on an 18th century
design. We’ll deliver nearby.

WHO COULD FORGET THAT FAMOUS

DAY?

Wooden Boat Cover Mounted for Hanging

Minimum Bid $150

Donated by the Finishing Touch

Ready-to hang reproduction of Wooden Boat

Magazine cover # 165 (March/April 2002) features

SULTANA’s launch a decade ago as photographed

by Michael Wooton. What a day! 20x30 inches.

IT’S A BEETLE. IT’S A CAT. IT’S A

SAILBOAT!

An Evening Sail on a Beetle Cat

Minimum bid $100

Donated by Drew McMullen & Claire Gervais

An evening sail in Chestertown (and in the wake

of history) for two aboard “Käthe,” a classic 12.5-

foot wooden Beetle Cat. John F. Kennedy learned

to sail in a Beetle Cat, Calvin Klein has one. So

do Senator John Kerry and director Stephen

Spielburg! The Beetle Cat is the oldest onedesign

racing sailboat in the United States, dating

back to the early 1920’s. Sail to take place on a

mutually agreeable date May-September, 2012.

SULTANA ON THE TOWN. SORT OF.
Framed Panoramic Photo of Chestertown
Minimum bid $75.
Donated by the Finishing Touch
A waterfront portrait of SULTANA’s home port
with her at rest out front. Approximate size 8x30
inches. Truly, a thing of beauty. Photographed by
Bob Ramsey.

WHAT WILL WE TALK ABOUT?

Lunch with Adam Goodheart, Original Copy

of Harpers Weekly, 1861, Signed Copy of

Goodheart’s Book 1861

Minimum Bid $150

Donated by Adam Goodheart

Lunch with Adam Goodheart, author of the

best-seller, “1861,” and director of Washington

College’s C.V. Starr Center for the Study of the

American Experience. Your copy of his book

comes with the issue of Harper’s Weekly from

April 1861, announcing the Confederate attack on

Fort Sumter. Lunch in Chestertown on a mutually

agreeable date. Donated by Adam Goodheart.

Now, to answer your question: You can talk about

scuba diving, or Sasquatch sightings, or maybe

even the author’s case for calling the Civil War

America’s second war for independence.

HOOPS DE DOO!

USS CONSTELLATION Mast Hoops

Minimum Bid $50

Donated by Drew McMullen & Claire Gervais

These mast hoops (the things that hold the sail

to the mast) were built for the USS Constellation

restoration in Baltimore in the late 1990’s. They

were fashioned from steam-bent oak and are

about 25-30 inches in diameter. Great decorative

pieces for the right house or good hula-hoops for

small children. You could also use them to rack

up the balls on round pool tables. Cost of one

of these mast hoops new would be about $50.

TAKE ME TO THE ANTIQUES ROAD

SHOW

Antique Wooden Rocking Horse

Minimum Bid $100

Drew McMullen, the donor, believes this toy dates

from the early 1930s. It is solid carved wood,

and while the package is a little worse for wear,

it is not beyond a full restoration. “I have no

idea what this is worth, but it could be a fortune!!

(or nothing),” says McMullen. The hay budget,

however, is minuscule.

THIS LAND IS YOUR LAND …

Landscaping Consultation

Minimum Bid $75

Donated by Miles Barnard

Two-hour on-site consultation and follow-up

documentation with Chestertown-based licensed

landscape architect D. Miles Barnard. Discuss

your future plans for a new project at your existing

property or talk about something totally new.

Ask for help identifying plants in your garden,

discuss an existing drainage problem, or talk

about ways to make your property or project site

more sustainable. After the site visit, Miles will

summarize the discussion and, if appropriate,

prepare a sketch or two.
